Sulawesi schoolgirl killers jailed

Three Muslim men have been jailed after being found guilty of beheading three Christian schoolgirls on the island of Sulawesi in 2005.
Hasanuddin, the alleged ringleader of the attack, was jailed for 20 years by a court in Indonesia, while two other men were sentenced to 14 years for their role in the killings.

Prosecutors said Hasanuddin ordered the killings to avenge the deaths of Muslims during an outbreak of sectarian violence in the troubled district of Poso.
He was accused of buying the machetes used in the attacks and was named as the author of a note left at the scene warning of more killings.
Hasanuddin had faced a maximum sentence of death and said before the verdict that he was ready to face the firing squad.

During his trial Hasanuddin admitted being involved in the killings, but denied masterminding the attacks.
He also asked the families of the schoolgirls for forgiveness.

"We are not cold-blooded killers," he told the central Jakarta district court in November. "We just wanted revenge."

More than 90 per cent of Indonesia's 220 million people are Muslim, but the area around Poso is home to a roughly equal number of Muslims and Christians.

Bomb mastermind confesses

A SUSPECTED top Al-Qaeda operative has confessed to plotting the bombings of the USS Cole and two US embassies in Africa.

In a Guantanamo Bay hearing transcript, Waleed bin Attash admits he was the mastermind behind the 1998 embassy attacks in Kenya and Tanzania which killed more than 200 people.

He also admits recruiting the suicide bombers who steered an explosives-laden boat into the guided missile destroyer Cole in 2000, killing 17 sailors and injuring dozens more.

"I participated in the buying or purchasing of the explosives," bin Attash said.

"I put together the plan for the operation a year and a half prior to the operation, buying the boat and recruiting the members that did the operation."

Bin Attash, alleged to have been bin Laden’s bodyguard at one time, is a Yemeni who was born and raised in Saudi Arabia.

He is one of 14 so called "high-value" prisoners transferred last year to US military custody at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base after being held by the CIA at a secret location.

Hearings for them are being conducted in secret by the military to determine whether the detainees should be declared "enemy combatants" who can be held indefinitely and prosecuted by military tribunals.

If, as expected, the 14 are declared enemy combatants, they could then be charged and tried under the new military commissions law signed by President Bush in October.

Bin Attash allegedly helped choose the September 11 hijackers and made two flights on US airlines to assess in-flight security procedures.

Fatah Al Islam

The chief of a small Palestinian Islamist group has denied allegations that it is linked with the Al Qaeda terror network and that it was responsible for deadly recent bombings in Lebanon.

"Our movement is not allied with any regime, nor with any organization on earth," Fatah Al Islam leader Shaker Abssi was quoted as saying in Friday's edition of L'Orient Le Jour daily.

Earlier this week, a Lebanese government official said that members of an Al Qaeda-linked Palestinian splinter group had admitted carrying out the February 13 deadly Lebanon bus bombings.

Lebanese interior minister Hassan Al Sabeh and police chief General Ashraf Rifi also said this week that Fatah Al Islam was an alias for Fatah-Intifada, a radical Palestinian group that they said works closely with Syrian intelligence.

Sabeh said that four Fatah Al Islam members carrying Syrian nationality had been arrested and a fifth wanted suspect was still at large.

Fatah Al Islam swiftly denied any involvement and accused the government of preparing an offensive against the dozen or so camps in Lebanon, which house more than half of the country's nearly 400,000 Palestinian refugees.

Abssi, who is holed up with armed supporters in the Nahr Al Bared Palestinian refugee camp in northern Lebanon warned that "if an offensive is launched against us, our response will be fierce."

And he challenged the authorities to present proof of the group's involvement in last month's bombing.

"Since the birth of our movement was announced, we have been under tight surveillance by the security services," he said. "I challenge them to prove that we have had any encounters with the people that are accused or that they are really part of our movement."

Abssi denied accusations by Syrian interior minister Bassam Abdel Majid that the Palestinian militant has been jailed in Syria because of links with Al Qaeda and for planning terrorist attacks.

"I was jailed in Syria, but not over links with Al Qaeda as he has claimed," Abssi said.

"I was jailed because I was accused of having planned to carry out an operation in the [Syrian] Golan [territory occupied by Israel], as well as of having carried and smuggled arms into Palestine [Israel]," he said.

Only 40 percent of the Muslims in urban areas get modern education and among them 3.1 percent are graduates and 1.2 percent are post graduates. Among the Muslim girls, only 32.8 percent go to schools and nine percent of them reach secondary level. It is highly pathetic that 60 percent of urban Muslim women cannot read and write, the report pointed out.

Never thought I'd post anything taken from The Sun newspaper, but here goes...

A MUSLIM woman in full hijab robes was allowed to swelter in a SAUNA because worried staff did not want to offend her.
She then jumped into the sports centre’s swimming pool to cool off while still wearing the black top-to-toe Islamic dress.
Staff did not know if they should enforce a dress code which asks customers to wear SUITABLE clothes.
People in the sauna — all wearing normal swimming cossies — were amazed as the woman joined them in the steam room in her robes.
Last night surprised Muslim spokesman Taj Hargey asked: “How can you swim properly if you wear a hijab?”
After ten minutes in the sauna and ten minutes in the pool the mystery woman changed out of her wet hijab into a dry one in the changing rooms and left alone.
Yesterday members of the David Lloyd Leisure centre in Oxford said they were baffled by the women’s actions.
Club member Ian Caldwell, 46, was sitting in the sauna when the fully-dressed woman walked in.
He said: “I pointed out that it was a sauna and asked her if it was appropriate. All the other women in there were all in bathing costumes.
“When I saw her in the pool later, she was still wearing the Islamic outfit.
“The pool attendant said she was allowed to wear this due to her religious customs. It was just political correctness gone completely barmy. I told the manager that it was my custom to attend saunas naked, as they do in Sweden, and said I trusted he would find that equally acceptable.
“But to be serious, this is a question of hygiene, not religious rights.”
Taj, chairman of the Muslim Educational Centre in Oxford, said: “Wearing a veil is nothing to do with Islam, it is a cultural tradition.
“People should have appropriate swimwear when they come to a leisure centre. It is basic common sense.”
He added the incident demonstrated a problem among some Muslim women in Britain.
He said: “They think this is their way of making a statement, but this is the worst possible statement. They are shooting themselves in the foot.”
Centre manager Liam MacGilp said all pool and sauna attendants had now been briefed on the company’s policy, and that robed or outdoor garments would not be allowed in future.

Hussein's vice president sentenced to death

Taha Yassin Ramadan, Saddam Hussein's vice president, has been sentenced to death for crimes against humanity. "The condemned Taha Yassin Ramadan shall be sentenced to hanging until death for committing deliberate killing crimes," Judge Ali al-Kahachi said, after the Iraqi High Tribunal met to review an earlier life sentence.

"This is in accordance to the higher criminal court and the penal court law," the judge added, according to AFP. Following the verdict, Ramadan shouted Monday: "I swear to God I am innocent. May God support me. May God take revenge against everyone who rendered me injustice."

The King Fahad Academy in west London has already said that it will remove the disputed chapters from the books in question, which it said were used as "secondary sources."

It claims that the controversy arose from a misinterpretation of the Koran-based material and stresses that it does not teach hatred.

Iran supplies bombs?

The Iranian embassy in Baghdad angrily dismissed Sunday's claim by an anonymous group of US defense officials that its agents had smuggled hundreds of sophisticated bombs to Shiite groups fighting US forces in Iraq.

"It's not true. It's not fair. Iran did not supply those weapons. It is like America's former statements against Saddam Hussein about the weapons of mass destruction," an Iranian diplomat said.

On Sunday, an anonymous group of US defense officials showed journalists what they said was proof that Iranian agents have smuggled weapons to Iraq, including "explosively formed penetrators [EFPs]," a form of roadside booby-trap.

These bombs, they said, have killed 170 American and allied troops since May 2004. The defense officials refused to allow reporters to name them or record their briefing, but released pictures of alleged Iranian arms.

Baghdad bombs

The blasts appeared timed to mark the end of a national 15-minute pause for reflection called by Prime Minister Nuri Al Maliki on the first anniversary of the demolition of a Shiite shrine by Sunni bombers.

Bombs also struck Shiite districts in the heart of the capital on a day when Maliki's security forces had launched a massive security sweep designed to halt just this kind of apparently sectarian massacre.

Security and medical officials said at least 67 people were killed and more than 155 wounded by the explosions. "We expect that number to rise; we're checking the hospitals," said a defense ministry official.

Boycott Israeli products

The labor movement and the Stop the Wall Campaign issued an appeal on Sunday to international and Arab trade unions to boycott Israeli goods until the ongoing assaults on the Palestinian people come to an end.
At a press conference in Al Bireh City just outside of Ramallah, labor official Haider Ibrahim said, “The unions and the popular campaign appeal for an inclusive boycott of Israeli products and for continued resistance to the Apartheid Wall.”
He said that the Wall has nothing to do with the security claim with which the Israelis have sold the idea, but is rather part of a larger political project.
Ibrahim asked that Palestinian workers escalate their boycott of Israeli materials to include all of those available on the market.
He appealed to the Arab League to support the nonviolent action against occupation.

Perhaps Israel contemplated a similar boycott of muslim related 'materials' but quickly realised that they didn't want their wife beating sticks anyway.

Taliban killed

Three Taliban rebels were killed and eight were arrested in southern Afghanistan, while militants kidnapped an Afghan security worker, police and officials said on Friday.

The guard employed by USPI, a US private security firm, was abducted on Thursday in the southern province of Ghazni that has seen frequent Taliban attacks, provincial police chief Tafsir Khan said.

During a hunt for the kidnappers police detained six men for suspected involvement in the kidnapping, Khan said, adding that there was no news on the fate of the security worker.

The Taliban have threatened to target Afghan nationals working for the foreign military or civilian companies.

Israel blitzed Gaza from the air overnight, setting the interior ministry ablaze and killing a Palestinian fighter in the latest offensive aimed at freeing a soldier held by Palestinian militants.

Israel stepped up its assault on Gaza overnight, causing the first Palestinian casualties since it launched a ground offensive early on Wednesday, its biggest military operation since pulling out of the territory in September.

The Supreme Court rebuked President Bush and his anti-terror policies Thursday, ruling that his plan to try Guantanamo Bay detainees in military tribunals violates U.S. and international law.

The president and congressional Republicans immediately pledged to work on a new strategy for special trials for some of the hundreds of suspected al-Qaida and Taliban operatives rounded up in Afghanistan, Pakistan and other countries.

Bush said the ruling "won't cause killers to be put out on the street."

Staff Sgt. Raymond J. Plouhar, 30, died Monday of wounds suffered while conducting combat operations in Iraq’s volatile Anbar province, the Defense Department said on Tuesday.

Plouhar, who was stationed at Camp Pendleton, Calif., had taken four years off from active duty to serve as a recruiter in Flint after donating one of his kidneys to his uncle. He is seen in the 2004 film approaching prospective recruits in a mall parking lot.

The Supreme Leader said that Iran is the only country which both the government and nation have stood against bullying of the arrogant powers, so the dispute between Iran and the hegemonist powers is not an ordinary one. "The Islamic Republic of Iran regards popular support from 70 million population and sympathetic sentiments from Muslim nations as a security for the government. The Muslim nations announced their support for Iran's independent policy and admire Iran for taking up this line."

12 die in Iraq attacks

A trash collector and the head of security for Baghdad University died in separate drive-by shootings today as a string of attacks nationwide left a dozen people dead, police said.

The attack against the trash collector, a Shiite, took place early Thursday in western Baghdad, police Capt. Jamil Hussein said, according to the AP. Armed men in a civilian car also stopped a car carrying Kadhim Challoub, who was in charge of the guards at Baghdad University, ordered his driver and his guard out, then killed the security chief on the eastern side of the capital, according to police Lt. Mohammad Khayoun.

He also said a roadside bomb aimed at a police patrol missed its target but killed one civilian and wounded another in northern Baghdad.

Two merchants were shot dead near the civil defense office as they were waiting for a car to take them to work in the predominantly Sunni neighborhood of Sadiyah in southwestern Baghdad, Hussein said.

Elsewhere in the Iraqi capital, according to police, a baker died when a bomb went off near his workplace in Dora, and an electrical worker died while he was heading to work in a predominantly Sunni area of western Baghdad.

A bomb exploded in southern Baghdad as well, killing a woman and injuring her three sons as they were in their car, police Lt. Maitham Abdul-Razzaq said.

Police also found the body a man who had been blindfolded, handcuffed and shot in the head in western Baghdad.

Gunmen on a motorcycle also killed a policeman and attackers firing from a car shot to death a 34-year-old man working in a construction equipment shop in separate attacks in the Shiite holy city of Karbala, 50 miles south of Baghdad, local health official Abdul-Salam al-Zamily said.

Iraqi police in the northern city of Kirkuk found the body of a 15-year-old girl who had been kidnapped five days ago, Brig. Sarhat Qadir said.

The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) Wednesday condemned Israel's latest invasion as exposing the Zionist regime's claims to have 'withdrawn' from Gaza.

Russia has confirmed that four of its diplomats taken hostage in Iraq are dead, a day after a group announced their deaths in an internet video.
The confirmation came after Russian experts checked the authenticity of the videotape released by the kidnappers.

The Russian foreign ministry expressed "deep pain" that the kidnapping had ended "in an irremediable way" despite efforts to win their release.

A group called the Mujahideen Shura Council released the hostage video.

The insurgent umbrella group is linked to al-Qaeda in Iraq.

The video showed one man being beheaded and another shot dead, as well as the body of a third, but there was no sign of the fourth hostage.

The group had given Russia an ultimatum to withdraw from Chechnya and release Muslim prisoners from Russian jails - or the hostages would die. Chechen rebels said they had no links to the Iraqi group.

The men were seized in Baghdad on 3 June, and the kidnappers said the executions were in revenge for "torture, killing and displacement by the infidel Russian government" in Chechnya.

The Russian foreign ministry said the "terrorists" responsible were "inhuman, without honour, conscience or religion".

It urged the Iraqi authorities and the US-led coalition forces to find and punish the perpetrators.

Rape case four hanged in Pakistan

Four Muslim men were hanged in Pakistan on Thursday for gang-raping a teenage Christian girl at gunpoint in the city of Faisalabad in 1999.
The men were convicted by an anti-terrorism court. Their guilty verdicts were upheld by higher courts, and clemency appeals were turned down.

"The men were hanged at 0430," said a prison official in Faisalabad.

Christians form a small minority in Muslim-majority Pakistan, which has a population of about 150m people.

The bodies of the men were handed over to their relatives later on Thursday.

Saddam to face new charges

An investigative judge will file new criminal charges against Saddam Hussein in the next few days charging him in the deaths and deportation of thousands of Kurds in the 1980s, a government prosecutor has said.

Chief prosecutor Jaafar al-Moussawi on Sunday said the new charges, which would be announced in the coming days, would involve Saddam's alleged role in "Operation Anfal", which included the 1988 gassing of about 5,000 Kurdish civilians in the village of Halabja.

In all, Kurds maintain that more than 180,000 of their people were killed in Anfal, which began in 1987 and ended a year later. Hundreds of Kurdish villages in northern Iraq were destroyed and thousands were forced to leave their homes.

Al-Moussawi did not specify when the charges would be filed, but the Iraqi court which handles cases against the ousted ruler announced a press conference for Tuesday.

The Israeli army has been pounding the northern Gaza Strip with a massive artillery, air and naval attack for the past 48 hours. Israel has claimed the attacks are meant to stop rocket firing from the Gaza Strip. Israeli artillery hit the northern Gaza Strip with more than 150 shells Saturday.

Meanwhile, dozens of armed Fatah members on Saturday fired into the air, rejecting the Palestinian prime minister's call to end a public display of weapons. Samir Masharawi, a senior figure in Fatah movement, arrived from a trip to Egypt on Saturday, a day after four people were killed in factional fighting.

The violence was sparked by the assassination of a senior commander of the Popular Resistance Committees. His group accused several prominent Fatah figures, including Masharawi, of involvement.

Early Saturday, Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas urged calm and called for an end to public displays of weapons. But Masharawi rejected to the call.

"I will not be able to convince the Palestinian citizens or the sons of Fatah who feel very offended" by the accusations, he said. "When the government starts a correct beginning ... then we will cooperate to end the public display of weapons."

Iraq's resistance has replaced Jordanian-born Abu Mussab Al Zarqawi as political head of the rebels, confining him to a military role, the son of Osama Bin Laden's mentor said on Sunday in Jordan.

"The Iraqi resistance's high command asked Zarqawi to give up his political role and replaced him with an Iraqi, because of several mistakes he made," said Hudayf Azzam, who claims close contacts with the rebels. "Zarqawi's role has been limited to military action," said Azzam, whose late father Abdullah Azzam was the mentor of Bin Laden, the Al Qaeda boss.

"Zarqawi bowed to the orders two weeks ago and was replaced by Iraqi national Abdullah Bin Rashed Al Baghdadi," Azzam said.

Azzam, 35, whose father was known as the "prince of mujahideens", said he regularly receives "credible information on the resistance in Iraq".

He said Zarqawi "made many political mistakes", including "the creation of an independent organization, Al Qaeda in Iraq", adding, "Zarqawi also took the liberty of speaking in the name of the Iraqi people and resistance, a role which belongs only to the Iraqis."

As a result "the resistance command inside and outside Iraq, including imams, criticized him and after long discussions demanded that he be confined to military action", Azzam said. A 10-year strategic plan for Muslims will be submitted at the summit, ushering in a new era of Islamic unity and solidarity.

Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, OIC Secretary-General, said that neither Iraq nor Kashmir were on the agenda of the conference. He explained that the OIC was intended to review the current state of the Islamic nation and to explore strategies for the Muslim world and enable it to face the challenges of the 21st century.

“The summit will discuss ways and means for the Islamic nation to regain a sense of self-confidence and to enable it to face the dangers that threaten it,” Ihsanoglu added.

Bin Laden alive and leading jihad

Al Qaeda's leader Osama bin Laden is still alive and leading a holy war against the West, the network's deputy leader Ayman al-Zawahri says in an Internet video.

"Al Qaeda for holy war is still, thanks to God, a base for jihad," Zawahri said in a video posted on a website frequently used by Islamists groups. "Its prince Sheikh Osama bin Laden, may God protect him, is still leading its jihad."

Saddam Hussein went on trial today for the killing of nearly 150 Shiites in the town of Dujail in 1982, by pleading not guilty.

"I said what I said, I am not guilty, I am innocent," the former Iraqi dictator told the court after the charges were read out. The other seven defendants also declared they were "innocent".

Earlier, Saddam refused to identify himself when asked and questioned the five-man Special Tribunal's legitimacy. "You know me. You are an Iraqi and you know who I am," he said. "I won't answer to this so-called court. Who are you? What are you?" he asked the chief judge.

Beforehand, Saddam's defense attorney, Khalil Al Dulaimi's, announced that he would seek a three-month delay of the trial for what he viewed as illigitimacy of the court, established in 2003 under the occupation of US forces.

"His morale is very, very, very high and he is very optimistic and confident of his innocence," al-Dulaimi told reporters ahead of the trial. He went on: "We will dispute the legitimacy of the court as we've been doing every day. "We will claim it is unconstitutional and not competent to try the legitimate president of Iraq."

If convicted, Saddam, along with seven other men involved in the killings, face the death penalty by hanging. The others on trial include ex-vice president Taha Yassin Ramadan and Barzan Ibrahim al-Hassan, Saddam's half-brother and former head of the intelligence service.

In addition to the Dujail case to begin on Wednesday, Saddam faces other several other charges, including the killing of some 180,000 Kurds in the 1980s and the death of 5,000 Kurds in 1988 when Saddam ordered the town of Halabja attacked by poison gas.

The judge who presides over the trial of Saddam has been named on Wednesday. Rizgar Mohammed Amin was unveiled as the senior member of the five-man tribunal just before the hearing was due to start. Amin is a Kurd in his late 40s from the northern city of Sulaimaniya.

The banned Islamist outfit Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) has reportedly threatened to blow up important installations in some district headquarters if the government does not stop arresting and harassing its activists.

About 400 suspected activists of the outfit were arrested afterthe August 17 countrywide series of bomb blasts, in which three people were killed and over 150 others injured.

In a letter to daily newspapers in the western Kushtia on Monday, JMB asked the district administration not to arrest or harass its activists, otherwise, it will blow up important installations including courts, police stations, municipality, banks, press club, district council and markets, The New Age reported Tuesday.

The Islamist outfit said in the letter, "It is not a threat. Itis the declaration of a jihad as the JMB activists, which are ready to sacrifice their lives for the enforcement of Islamic law in the country."

JMB made similar threats in the recent past at different districts of the country.

Police reportedly has taken adequate measures in this regard, hunting for the militant members of JMB, who allegedly carried outthe near-simultaneous chain bombing across the country on August 17.

Meanwhile, the government has identified another Islamist outfit the Harkatul Jihad-al-Islami (Islamic Movement for Jihad) as a terrorist organization and banned its activities on Monday.

Harkatul Jihad-al-Islami (Huji) is a self-proclaimed terrorist organization and its activities are very sensitive, a press note issued by the home ministry on Monday said, adding that the Bangladeshi government, on the basis of information received, has banned the activities of Huji.

The government announced the ban two months after JMB carried out the bomb blasts on August 17.

Earlier on February 23, the government banned two Islamist outfits the JMB and Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh (Awakened Muslim People Bangladesh) for "creating anarchy and engaging in subversive activities."

Huji's Bangladesh chapter has been involved in carrying out terrorist activities in the country for more than half a decade. It has been behind several major bomb attacks as well as assassination attempts on former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and some leading intellectuals.

Continuing violence in Southern Thailand

Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, secretary general of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, expressed deep concern over the reports about continuing violence against Muslims in Southern Thailand.

In a statement issued to 'Islamic News', he said that the recurring wave of violence would deal a severe blow to the ongoing efforts to reach a peaceful settlement of the Muslims' issue in the region.

According to Prof. Ihsanoglu, the continued acts of violence in Southern Thailand have claimed the lives of innocent Muslim civilians and destroyed their properties.
Some villages have been under siege and some families had to migrate.

The OIC chief sees in the recurring wave of violence a strong blow to the efforts being made to reach a peaceful settlement of the legitimate demands of the Muslim Thai citizens, through dialogue which is considered the only way to establish security, peace and stability in the southern part of the country.

Prof. Ihsanoglu stressed that dealing with the problems in the South from a security perspective will lead to continued violence and deterioration and aggravation of the situation. "Peaceful solution lies in addressing the roots of the problem and attempting to settle it through dialogue and positive handling of the legitimate aspirations of the population of the South," he said while adding that this will help Muslims to maintain and express their cultural identity as well as to manage their local affairs through participation guaranteed by the Thai constitution, by respecting territorial integrity of the country.

Iran accuses Britain of bombing

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced on Sunday that it believes Britain to be the most likely suspect behind Saturday’s bombing in Iran which killed five and wounded more than one hundred.

"We are very suspicious about the role of British forces in perpetrating such terrorist acts,"

He added that he viewed the presence of British troops along the Iran-Iraq border as the main reason behind unrest there.

Britain is suspected by some in Iran to be behind other such incidents in Khuzestan earlier this year, though Britain has officially denied any involvement in the bombings.

“We reject these allegations," a statement of the British embassy in Tehran said. “Any linkage between the British government and these terrorist outrages is without foundation," it added.

The bombing, which occurred in the southern Iranian town of Ahvaz, is thought to be caused by the detonation of two handmade bombs planted in garbage bins.
Ahvaz is near the Iraqi border, where British troops are stationed.

Some, including General Mohammad Hejazi, commander of the Islamic militant group of Basij, implied that Britain was attempting to cast an exaggerated image of unrest in the Iran.

Israel bans Palestinian movement

70 die in US aerial attack in Iraq

Nearly 70 Iraqi resistance fighters were killed in aerial bombardments by US jet fighters on Sunday near the town of Ramadi in western Iraq, a US military statement reported.

The report said that some 20 men were killed by a US precision-guided bomb when they supposedly attempted to lay a roadside bomb east of Ramadi. Another 50 were killed in and around the city by an assortment of US aircraft attacks, including jet fighters and helicopters.

US sources stated that there were no civilian casualties as a result of the incident, although various other reports that I have read suggest otherwise.

UK troops killed by IRA bombs

Eight British soldiers recently killed in Iraq were victims of bombs created by UK security services and later first used by the IRA in their armed struggle in Northern Ireland.

The report in the weekly Independent on Sunday contradicts the British government claims that tried to put the blame on Iran's Revolutionary Guards for making the devices.

It comes after IRNA reported on Saturday that British commanders on the ground in Basra dismissed the allegations against Iran amid suggestions that they had been politically motivated.

In its front-page story, the Independent on Sunday said the bombs and the firing devices used to kill the UK soldiers were "initially created by British security services as part of a counter-terrorism strategy at the height of the Northern Ireland conflict in 1990s." "The bombs were developed by the IRA using technology passed on by the security services in a botched "sting" operation more than a decade ago," it said, quoting security sources.

The bombs were said to include trigger using a three-way device, combining a command wire, a radio signal and an infra-red beam, which was "a technique perfected by the IRA."
"The technology reached the Middle East through the IRA's co- operation with Palestinian groups. In turn, some of these groups used to be sponsored by Saddam Hussein and his Baath party," a former British agent told the paper.

"There is no doubt in my mind that the technology used to kill our troops in Basra is the same British technology from a decade ago," the former agent said.

"Unfortunately, no one could see back then that this technology would be used to kill British soldiers thousands of miles away in a different war," the source added.

Saudi king vows to destroy Al Qaeda

Saudi King Abdullah vowed in his first television interview as monarch to eliminate Al Qaeda even if the battle took decades to win, condemning the terror network as "the work of the devil".

Abdullah also told US channel ABC in an interview due to be broadcast later on Friday that Riyadh would work to bring down oil prices whose rise he admitted had helped Saudi Arabia while damaging other countries.

The new king, who took over from late half-brother Fahd in April, insisted that Saudi Arabia was doing all it could to halt terror following the 9/11 attacks on the United States, in which most of the hijackers were Saudis.

He said that Saudi would "fight the terrorists and those who support them or condone their actions for 10, 20 or 30 years if we have to, until we eliminate this scourge".

Lawyer Louise Christian accused the government of failing to learn the lessons of Northern Ireland with its introduction of new anti terror laws.

Ms Christian, who represented a number of those detained in Guantanamo Bay,
predicted that "there will be a rise in miscarriages like the Birmingham Six and Guildford Four."

Addressing a House of Commons meeting the human rights lawyer drew further
parallels with Ireland predicting that the operation of the anti-terror laws will lead to the creation of an unbridged divide in the community. "People won't co-operate with the police as happened in Northern Ireland," said Ms Christian.

She also criticised the government's plans to extend the period that the police can detain people without charge under anti-terror laws from 14 days
to 3 months. "For the whole of the period of the Troubles with the IRA the
limit on detention was 7 days. The idea that you need three months to analyse evidence is a nonsense," said Ms Christian.

Ban the Qur'an

A Protestant evangelical pressure group has warned that it will try to use the government's racial and religious hatred law to prosecute bookshops selling the Qur'an for inciting religious hatred.

Christian Voice, a fringe fundamentalist group which first came to public prominence this year when it campaigned against the BBC's broadcasting of Jerry Springer The Opera, was among the evangelical organisations taking part in a 1,000-strong demonstration against the bill outside parliament yesterday as the House of Lords held a second reading debate on the measure.

Its director, Stephen Green, said the organisation would consider taking out prosecutions against shops selling the Islamic holy book. He told the Guardian: "If the Qur'an is not hate speech, I don't know what is. We will report staff who sell it. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that unbelievers must be killed."

Dutch Minister proposes ban on burqa

The Netherlands is likely to become the first country in Europe to ban the burka under government proposals that would bring in some of the toughest curbs on Muslim clothing in the world.

The country's Integration Minister, Rita Verdonk, told Parliament that she was going to investigate where and when the burka should be banned.

The burka, traditional clothing in some Islamic societies, covers a woman's face and body, leaving only a strip of gauze for the eyes.

The proposals are likely to win the support of parliament because of the expected backing by right-wing parties. But they have caused outrage among Muslim and human rights groups, who say that the government is pandering to the far right.

Verdonk admitted that a complete ban on the garment would be legally tricky because of freedom of religion legislation. However, she said that she would prohibit the garments "in specific situations" on grounds of public safety. The ban is likely to be enforced in shops, public buildings, cinemas, train and bus stations and airports, as well as on trains and buses.

A ruling by Britain’s highest court on the use of torture evidence is likely to have profound implications for the worldwide ban on torture, Human Rights Watch (HRW)said today.

Britain’s highest court will convene on Monday, October 17 to consider whether torture evidence obtained from third countries is permitted in domestic British law. The House of Lords Judicial Committee will hear an appeal against an August 2004 majority decision by the Court of Appeal that the U.K. government was entitled to rely on torture evidence in special terrorism cases, provided that the U.K. “neither procured nor connived at” the torture. The use of evidence obtained through torture or other ill-treatment is prohibited by international law.

“When it comes to torture, the rules of the game must not change.” said Holly Cartner, Europe and Central Asia director at Human Rights Watch, “You can’t accept torture evidence without condoning torture.”

Human Rights Watch is part of a coalition of fourteen human rights and anti-torture organizations intervening in the House of Lords case.

Under the Convention against Torture, to which 140 countries including the U.K. are party, evidence obtained under torture is inadmissible in “any proceedings” before a court. The rule is also part of customary international law binding on all states. But a two-to-one majority in the Court of Appeal held that because the convention is not part of British law, the courts did not have to exclude such evidence.

Danish newspaper slanders prophet

The Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) expressed strong condemnation over the slandering of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) by the Danish newspaper “Jyllands-Posten,” published from Copenhagen.

ISESCO, in a press statement, stated that this slander is a violation of international law, which forbids the infringement of peoples’ religious beliefs."
The statement said that running cartoons allegedly of Prophet Muhammad is not an expression of the freedom of opinion and faith, nor is it a part of human rights; it is rather a blasphemy and calumny. "One billion and three hundred million Muslims throughout the world consider this slander against their Prophet by the newspaper as an aggression against them all.
Consequently, they call on the paper to apologize to all Muslims,” ISESCO said. Danish Muslims condemned the Danish daily for publishing some 12 cartoons featuring the prophet in a despicable manner.

MI6 recruited Al-Muhajiroun terrorists

The British intelligence service M16 recruited Muslim extremists in Britain with the assistance of the now disbanded terrorist group, Al-Muhajiroun , for terror training abroad and to fight in Serbia claims Oldham MP and former cabinet minister Michael Meacher.

The now disbanded al-Muhajiroun group held meetings in Manchester after 9/11 praising the courage of the suicide bombers and claimed to be helping UK Muslims to fight US troops in Afghanistan. Since the July 7th terrorist attacks on London Scotland Yard has been interested in an alleged member of al-Muhajiroun, Haroon Rashid Aswat, who some sources have suggested could have been behind the London bombings. Therefore it seems that a Muslim terrorist group that was assisted by MI6 to recruit terrorists to kill European Christians in Serbia, then used the terror training it received from Pakistani security services and in Serbia to train the British Muslim terrorists that slaughtered 56 British citizens in the July 7th bombings.

Dozens killed in Caucasus

A number of police and rebels have been killed in fighting across a city in Russia's volatile North Caucasus area.
Civilians are also feared caught up in the clashes that spread to a school, airport and government buildings in Nalchik city, Kabardino-Balkaria.

A hospital source told Moscow radio there were 20 "uniformed" bodies.

Kabardino-Balkaria, near war-ravaged Chechnya, has been the scene of several confrontations between police and alleged Islamist extremists.

A police official told Itar-Tass news agency that a number of police and militants had been killed.

"We are checking the information about fatalities at police stations and possible victims among civilians," he said.

A source at Nalchik's Republican Hospital told Ekho Moskvy radio that the dead who had been brought in were "all people in uniform".

At least 40 injured people had been taken to the hospital, with more arriving all the time, the source added.

Frantic parents

Fighting broke out in the Belaya Rechka area early on Thursday and spread to several parts of the city.

A local Interior Ministry source told Itar-Tass that rebels launched a "carefully planned" simultaneous attack on police stations, Russia's security agency, military and drugs-control offices as well as the airport.

He said a security operation was under way across the city to track down and kill the militants.

"There was heavy fighting everywhere; attacks have been repelled; there have been fatalities and wounded; but part of the attackers has been destroyed and scattered," the official said.

The school caught up in the fighting is based near the local anti-terrorism unit, the Associated Press reported.

A teacher said all the pupils were evacuated. Parents searched frantically for their children in the school yard as black smoke billowed overhead.

American and Briton kidnapped in Gaza

An American and a Briton have become the latest foreign journalists to be kidnapped by gunmen in the Gaza Strip, Palestinian officials and witnesses said.

The two men were abducted on Wednesday while on the streets of the volatile southern city of Khan Yunis, said Interior Ministry Spokesman Tawfiq Abu Khussa.

The pair were then bundled into a car before being driven away at high speed to an unknown location, witnesses said.

Security sources said intensive negotiations were under way to secure the release of the pair and expressed hope that they would be freed shortly, without giving further details.

There have been a series of kidnappings of foreign journalists and aid workers in Gaza in recent weeks, although all of the hostages have been released unharmed.

Bahraini MPs call to re-open Israeli Boycott Office

Bahraini MPs on Tuesday voted for new laws banning any ties with Israel. They also demanded the re-opening of the Israeli Boycott Office, to block imports of Israeli goods.

According to the GDN, there were outbursts during the session, despite assurances by Foreign Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa that there was no move to normalise relations with Israel.

Shaikh Khalid was summoned to parliament after 15 MPs signed a demand that the government explain the closure of the boycott office.

All the MPs present backed a demand that the government draft a law banning Bahraini firms from dealing and co-operating with Israel.

The MPs called on the Cabinet to reactivate the 1963 law against normalisation of relations with Israel and the re-opening of the boycott office. MPs also demanded a clear obligation from Bahraini authorities to respect Arab and GCC agreements in relation to Israel.

The debate on Israel came after Bahrain negotiated a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the US, which calls for lifting all forms of boycotts. Speaking to MPs, Shaikh Khalid said the closure of the boycott office was key to securing the FTA. "The issue about the office's role was raised by the US Congress and we had to act accordingly, or else the government would lose the agreement," he said.

"The boycott will continue with or without the office, through the sincerity and devotion of the people."

Ayman Al Zawahiri criticizes violence

A letter written by Al Qaeda’s second in command has critiziced the use of excessive violence against Iraq’s Shiite majority and Al Qaeda captives as a means to further the organization’s goals. The letter, written by Ayman Al Zawahiri, was made public by US intelligence services on Tuesday.

Zawahiri wrote the letter to Al Qaeda’s leader in Iraq, Abu Musad Al Zarqawi, saying that the tactics applied in Iraq were counterproductive and unacceptable to most Muslims.

Zawahiri also condemns Zaraqawi for the public killing of hostages in the letter, and argues for a balance of attacks with political efforts to gain the support needed to establish an Islamic government body in Iraq following the withdrawal of foreign troops.

Though Zawahiri is critical of Shiites for their cooperation with the US, he notes that more than 100 Al Qaeda fighters are themselves Shiite, and that such acts also provoke the response of Iran at a time when the US enemy is targeting both Al Qaeda and Iran.

He also questions attacks against mosques, and says, “Many of your Muslim admirers amongst the common folk are wondering about your attacks on the Shia.”

Suicide bombers kill 1

Two suicide car bombs exploded in Baghdad today killing one soldier and injuring 19. One suicide car bombing occured in western Baghdad in the Bakriyah region.
As people rushed to the scene to help the injured, a roadside bomb went off wounding another three.

Earlier in the day, a convoy of Iraq’s minister of provincial affairs was attacked by a car bomb as well, wounding four of his bodyguards. The minister, Saad Naif Al-Hardan, was not at the scene as the attack took place, as the convoy was en route to him at the time of the attack. Iraqi police believe that those responsible for the attack most likely were targeting Al Hardan, thinking that he was in the convoy.

Ghazi Kana'an commits suicide

Syria's Minister of Interior Gen. Ghazi Kana'an died in his office after committing suicide. "The authorities concerned have been conducting investigations into the incident," SANA reported.

Kana'an , the ex-security chief of Syria in Lebanon, was one of 13 senior Syrian officials, who were investigated by German prosecutor Detlev Mehlis in connection to the murder of former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq Hariri earlier this year.

Hours before he died, Kanaan contacted the Beirut Voice of Lebanon radio station and dlivered a statement, concluding with the words: "I believe this is the last statement that I could make." He asked seasoned interviewer 'Wardeh' to pass his comments to other broadcast media.

Iraqi interior minister apologizes

Iraqi Minister of Interior Bayan Jabor has apologized for comments he had made towards Saudi Arabia last week, including referring to Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al Faisal as a “*bedouin riding camel."

He added that he hoped ties between Iraq and Saudi Arabia would remain strong. “I hope these statements and what has been said and written will be a passing summer cloud ... My statements have nothing to do with the Iraqi government,”

Jabor had made the comments following expressions of concern on Saudi Arabia's part regarding the intentions of Iraq's Shiite community. He also criticized Saudi Arabia for unjust treatment of its Shiite community and women.

*Bedouin: Generic name for a desert-dweller, is a term generally applied to Arab nomadic groups.

Israel detains 117 Hamas members

117 members of Hamas were arrested by Israeli security forces in the latest detention operation in the West Bank, according to a statement released on Monday by Israel's internal secret service, the Shin Bet.
The men reportedly belonged to three separate divisions of Hamas in the West Bank in and around the towns of Hebron and Ramallah.

According to Israeli sources, the men were responsible for a series of attacks against Israelis, including the kidnap and killing of Nuriel Sasson outside of Jerusalem in September, and the bombing of a bus station in southern Israel in August which killed six Israelis.

Thirty-five were arrested in Dahariya, south of Hebron, while fifty-nine were arrested in Shuyukh, north of Hebron. 23 others were arrested at an undisclosed location.

Psychic demands $25 million for finding Saddam

A Brazilian psychic is demanding that the United States pay him $25 million as a reward for directing US troops to Saddam Hussein's exact hiding place in 2003.

Jucelino Nobrega Da Luz claims to have sent letters to the U.S. Government beginning in September 2001 with exact location of Saddam's hiding place, though he never received a reply from US authorities.

Da Luz claimed that without his letters of instruction, the US would not have successfully captured Iraq's former leader. He believes, therefore, that he is entitled to the $25 million reward posted for help leading to his capture, according to Reuters.

Da Luz had taken up the matter with Brazil’s second-highest court, the Superior Court of Justice, after a lower court in his home state of Minas Gerais decided that the claim would have to be judged in the United States, and the higher tribunal ruled otherwise.

His lawyers attest that Da Luz has an uncanny knack for predicting the future, stating that "Via dreams, he sees situations, facts that will happen."

If the Brazilian court upholds his claim, the matter will be presented to US legal authorities at the US State Department.

Saddam to be allowed to vote in Iraqi referendum

Former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein will be entitled to participate in Iraq's upcoming nationwide referendum in which Iraqis will vote "yes" or "no" to the country's first constitution.

Amongst Iraq's 26 million citizens, an estimated 10,000 imprisoned Iraqis, most of whom are Sunnis, will also be allowed to vote.

Saddam, who will go on trial four days after the referendum for the murder of 143 inhabitants of a Shiite village north of Baghdad, is expected to waive his right, as the constitution to be voted on bans the former "Saddamist Baath Party".

UK seeks powers to close mosques

Home Secretary Charles Clarke announced controversial proposals that give the police powers to close mosques, which fail to comply with an order to prevent them from being used to forment extremism.

Releasing his proposals by way of a consultation paper, Clarke also made clear his determination to bring in other tough new powers already put forward, including extending the maximum pre-charge detention for terror suspects from two weeks to three months.

"The UK is facing a real and continuing terrorist threat, and it is vital that we do everything in our power to tackle those who would seek to strike at the heart of our society, to destroy what we hold dear," he said.

Under the proposals, he said he was considering creating a legal process whereby those controlling places of worship can be required by a court order to take steps to stop "certain extremist behaviour" occurring.

But regardless of whether a person is successfully prosecuted for failure to comply with the order, Clarke said that a further order could still be issued restricting the use of the place of worship,including temporary closure.
