Afghan troops kill 31 fighters in clash

Afghan government forces have killed 31 suspected Taliban fighters near the eastern border with Pakistan, the heaviest reported fighting since parliamentary elections two weeks ago.

Insurgents attacked an Afghan army position near Angore Adda in Paktika province late on Sunday, triggering a four-and-a-half hour gun battle, according to Defence Ministry spokesman General Muhammad Zahir Azimi.

He said the rebels fled, leaving 28 dead bodies. Azimi said four Afghan army soldiers were injured, one seriously.

"The fighting was intense," Azimi said, adding that the army captured a lot of ammunition from the Taliban fighters, including anti-aircraft and artillery shells as well as rocket launchers.

He said no US-led coalition forces took part.

Two die as convoy of Iraq oil minister attacked

U.S. forces battled armed men holed up in houses in a town near the Syrian border, killing 28, the American military said.
The U.S. operation in the Syrian border region is the fourth since May.

On Monday, gunmen opened fire on a convoy carrying Iraq's oil minister, killing two of his bodyguards.
Ibrahim Bahr was not hurt in the attack, which occurred at 9:30 a.m. in western Baghdad, said police Lt. Mohammed Kheyon. A third bodyguard was injured.

Meanwhile, al-Qaeda in Iraq claimed to have taken two Marines captive during the fighting and threatened to execute them within 24 hours unless all female Sunni detainees are released from U.S. and Iraqi prisons in the country. The U.S. military said the claim appeared baseless.

MPAC condemns Bali bombings

Los Angeles, MPAC -- The Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) unequivocally condemns today's bombings of popular tourist areas on the Indonesian resort island of Bali, which killed at least 19 people and wounded at least 51 others.

As a representative of mainstream American Muslims, MPAC reminds the international community during this sensitive time that Islam does not tolerate the use of terrorism for any purpose, regardless of who the aggressors are and what their justifications might be.

Imam in NY resigns over 9/11 remarks

An Imam appointed to New York City’s fire department resigned from his post on Friday before being sworn in amidst storm of controversy over his 9/11 conspiracy remarks.

Imam Intikab Habib, was quoted by New York Newsday on Friday as saying he doubted that hijackers were responsible for the destruction of the World Trade Center, which killed 343 firefighters. He said that a broader conspiracy might have been necessary to bring the buildings down so quickly.

New York City’s fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta and the department’s Islamic Society, which recommended Imam Habib for the post, said they learned of Mr Habib’s views on Thursday when the Newsday reporter who was writing the article asked for a comment.

Mr Scoppetta said that while he did not demand Mr Habib’s resignation, once he confirmed that the article was accurate, the proper course of action was clear to all involved.

“As a chaplain he would be required to administer to all of our people, and his expressed views make it clear to me that he would not be able to perform that function with any credibility,” Mr Scoppetta said on Friday.
“I’ve heard professionals say that nowhere ever in history did a steel building come down with fire alone,” he was quoted as saying. “It takes two or three weeks to demolish a building like that. But it was pulled down in a couple of hours. Was it 19 hijackers who brought it down, or was it a conspiracy?”

I'm sure those f**king huge aircraft ploughing into them didn't help.
